I do heaps better on my break with a bigger flatter tip
This isn't based on scientific fact, it's based on me practicing with various different cues/cue tips
how does your break cue tip compare with your playing cue tip ? (size and shape)

Much harder and flatter. Thinner too.

Flat and extra hard. It's made from a phenolic material. I think it's some sort of plastic. On the break shaft it hits a ton!! /ccboard/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

For my break cue, I use a Sumo tip Hard, slightly more flat than the dime shape. Get a lot of speed with it, wether I use extra power with the body or just the speed of the arm alone.

You're right about the flat tip, it's probably the best way to go, hard of soft is not so important so long as you get a good square hit on the cue ball.
