I just got back. Florida won both the matches total and the games total. NY needed to sweep the last event 4-0 in order to tie and they lost instead. Could have gone either way but the old men played tough.

There is a full report on AZBilliards sad for the NY crew but it sounds like an exciting event.

I don't see anything on AZBilliards about day three. Probably the most interesting match was the one-pocket. It was fascinating to watch Varner play. Zuglan was a good test for him and except for one instance when Mike forgot which pocket he had and bunted a ball in front of Nick's pocket the games were very tight and showed how there can be drama brought into the game of pool. It was like a chess match with great defensive strategy and then an exciting endgame. The games were a bit lengthy and maybe they should adopt the short rack like in banks.

A little more on the patriot cup. There were several celebrities of the pool world in attrendance. Mike Sigel played in the pro-am tournament on Friday and Jeanette Lee made an appearance on Sunday.
It is also rumored that Howie Pearl graced the venue on Saturday. It seems that he entered surreptiously in order not to upstage the pros in the middle of play. There is another tournament Monday with Ms. Lee doing an exhibition.

The straight pool match was interesting , if not exactly a clinic on how to play. Both Tony Robles and Ray Martin missed some routine shots with Tony fianlly getting to an early lead at 39 balls. Ray then managed a few runs around the 20's to get to 82 without any response from Tony. Tony then got a run of 33 and seemed destined to get the needed 28 balls since he had a great breakshot set up and was clearly on a roll. The pool gods intervened as Tony hit his hand on the corner pocket during his stroke and missed the shot while scattering the balls.

With an open rack Ray got around 8 and missed again. Tony finished the rack and set up for another classic break shot but went crosside with the cue ball and scratched. With another open rack Ray got a few and missed. Tony seemed to have it in the bag but he got a few and missed. Ray then ran 4 or 5 and got out.
