I think this is true for practically every sport out there.

Yes, I agree that a challenge brings out the best in just about everybody, no matter what the sport or competition. I can play well against a poor player, but only for so long. I quickly get bored with it and tend to rush through or not pay attention, and my game obviously suffers. A stronger opponent keeps me focused and makes me keep trying harder, and therefore yes, I would agree that I do play better for a longer period of time against the better player.
