View Full Version : how much can be donated in a memorial tourney?

A local player only 43 years old passed away last Saturday at a tourney during a match. We would like to have a memorial tourney to help with burial expenses. What kind of advice to you guys have out there? What can we expect to take out off the top without too much complaining. This guy was popular and ran many local tourneys. What do you guys think>

Back in July 2002 the Brass Rail Poolhall in Athens,Ga. held a charity event for one of the locals, Bob Davis, that had just suffered a heart-attack and then lost his leg to diabetes. The owner of the poolroom there, Doug "Papa" Murphy, had some of the Pro ladies there such as Jeanette Lee, Allison Fisher, Ewa Laurence, Belinda Campos, Helena Thornfeldt, Monica Webb and Tiffany Nelson to help promote the event. There was a large sum of money raised for Mr. Davis. The publicity received from the event was heard around the world. Maybe he can give you some tips on how to put on such an event.

You could have spectators make donations as well as run a few raffles for some donated stuff. It doesn't have to be a pool cue, it could be a dinner or something. I think 25% of entries going to a fund would not be out of line.

My opinion, which is only an opinion, with regard to the charity part is that you either go all the way with all entries fees going to the charity or run the tournament as you normally would and raise money for the charity part by auctioning a cue you donate and perhaps a fifty-fifty raffle.
In any event would recommend that whatever course you take that you clearly disclose how much of entry fee is going to the memorial charity, etc.
Absent adequate disclosure, events like this, done for all of the right reasons, can unfortunately turn into dissatisfiers and best intentions can be taken the wrong way.
Sorry for the some what pessimistic view, which is against my nature, but the opinion was formed based on past personal experiences.
We held such an event for the wife of the deceased. We donated a cue for auction and added free table time. Others donated items put up for auction. Half of the entry fees went to the wife. Players and friends donated money. A fair portion of the players winnings were donated, by the individual players choice. We donated outside food for lunch. Our income was from drinks ect. Maybe we broke even.
I went to another one very similar. By taking off the top, what is that reference to? The tournament?
What ever you do if it is up-front people shouldn't mind.

donate the green fee. Players are usuly going to have to pay the green fee anyway most would rather see it go to a good cause.
