View Full Version : Pool Haiku: Put It Right Here

Proving once again that there is beauty and poetry everywhere, here is a place to display your pool Haikus.

As you know, Haiku is a contemplative poetry that captures actions, colors, contrasts and surprises. Haiku is about sharp observation and minimalist description. It's almost like a photo of some specific moment. The best haiku reflect an undeniable Zen influence. Writing and reading Haiku will promote relaxation and harmony, which will provide benefits for all your activities including shooting pool.

The Haiku poem must have 3 lines and 17 total syllabes distributed as five, seven, and five in each line. For example:

A colorful rack,
Spinning, crashing, back and forth,
Then the 8-ball drops.

I ran the table,
One more ball will make my day,
Noooooo, I choked on nine.

White milk on green cloth,
Staining blouse along the way,
Should have wore a bra.

Railbird makes snide remark,
Knock him out and drag to lav.
All is quiet now.

Tom, you win the prize for most original post of the day! Here is my poor effort to keep on the Haiku path...

Bright light on green felt
Higher truth found in movements
Balls move, become still

Drop down on the shot
Keeping still is the mountain!
One pointedness of mind

Pool gods smile or frown
Shots go in or hang on lip
Just shoot and move on

Woo!!! I think I just had a flash back. I used to hang in a Coffee house many years ago Called The House of Pegasus, and listened to that style of poetry all night. I even wrote and performed some myself.

Tom,

You have waaaaaay too much time on your hands. Do you need an assistant at let's say $60K a year??

Let me know. I'm signing off for tonight but will eagerly await your reply tomorrow.

Good night all,

Barbara

Alfie,

A very good catch Al
but you failed to call the eight
now give me the cash /ccboard/images/icons/smile.gif

Alfie
03-24-2002, 04:17 AM
The 8 was straight in
with BCA rules, my friend,
so that means I win.

(I threw the rhymes in.
And left out the zen.)

AL,

I always get the screw
when it comes to the damn rules,
I should quit this game!

TomBrooklyn
03-24-2002, 05:20 AM
Do not give up now.
The rules are the same for both.
Some you win, some lose.

[Some very nice Haikus so far. Some excellent thoughts captured like a snapshot picture moment. Some are funny, and some are very clever. Exclam!]

(Remember to count those syllables: five, seven, five. Discipline combines with freedom to create beauty.)

Samurai pool cue.
Do Tom Cruise imitation,
Bang. Opps. Sorry, man.

Her legs are sleek,
Her tits are hard,
I felt her all over.

I entered through whim,
sat and watched,
soon it was gin.

My face turns red,
she says it again,
I am her Mantra.

My heatbeat sounds,
Fingers shaking,
beads calling me.

Rebel Yell,

Big smash,
balls scatter,
collects dough...

Listen for railbirds,
cherping sadly,
stuffs more dough in pocket..

Watching Kato,
sloutch in chair,
turtles waddle home..

Voodoo lurks,
trees bow in fear,
Kansas is National Champions...

Voodoo..feels he missed his calling as a monk or a Buhda

Seeking harmony?
How can you achieve it now?
By writing Haiku.

Why can’t torts play pool?
Because they can’t hold a cue,
Or reach the table.

(tort is short for tortoise)

Kato
03-30-2002, 07:58 AM
You are soooooo done you don't even know it. There will be no slouching however. This will be something for you to always remember. Maryland 92, Kansas 79. Nap time for Voodoo.

Kato~~~grinning.

Voodoo Daddy

Here is my second attempt at Haiku-ing;

R.J. on crack,
boy needs rehab,
True score...Kansas 104-Maryland 94

Voodoo...tells all Turtle fans to bring it

Kato
03-30-2002, 08:31 AM
Now before ya'll go thinkin' that ole Steve don't have all his bolts tightened, you're gonna have to excuse the boy, he's under a lot of pressure. Now Tom, I can't believe that you're gonna stand there and take a crack at my boys. Well, come 8 o'clock in the p.m. tonight everybody that doubts The Turtles will be sorry.

Kato~~~realizes Steve's Hakiu's is 4,4, and 13 syllables. He probably didn't pass poetry in school.

Maryland running
3 pointers fall with no sweat
rebound, fast break, score!!!!!!!

Kansas foul trouble
players getting tired now
gasping for some air.

Tic-toc goes the clock
Terps finally get ring, just due
Kansas choaks, again.

Kato
03-30-2002, 09:01 AM
My Uncle Bill is a pastor in the Lawerance, Kansas area. He does the prayers before all Kansas football and basketball home games. Little tidbit of knowledge for ya. Doesn't mean Kansas gets to win though.

Kato~~~is much closer to Kansas basketball than Voodoo is.

Voodoo Daddy
03-30-2002, 09:20 AM
Your right R.J....I didnt do very well in poetry, spelling or school in general. I was in the bathroom taking book from guys that believe they had a handle on college baskets. Kansas + 1 1/2 is a joke... Jayhawks are chalk today!!

Voodoo...loves R.J. like the 'lil brother I never wanted

03-30-2002, 09:24 AM
Private victory's precede public victory's.

One more? OK. This is a twist on an Albert Einstine quote.

Everything is reletive. The Universe is expanding into nothing which is something, so making a long nine on a hill-hill match is easy. /ccboard/images/icons/wink.gif

Quote: Kato:
Now Tom, I can't believe that you're gonna stand there and take a crack at my boys. Well, come 8 o'clock in the p.m. tonight everybody that doubts The Turtles will be sorry.

Hi RJ, actually, I thought Vodoo's eloquent prose about waddling turtles was a reference to Herman, the Redfoot Tortoise that resides with me. He's about 25 yrs old now and weighs 16 pounds. Of course, both of us are rooting for the advance of the Maryland Terrapins, especially Herman. I've sometimes wondered why Maryland chose a terrapin to be their mascot, as mostly they are not that fleet of foot, however they are very strong and steadfast. Herman can wedge himself under small pieces of furniture and move them around the room. He used to lodge himself in place under my nieces rolling walker when she was a baby and roll her around her house all day long. Therefore, I expect Maryland to dominate under the boards and wear Kansas down over the course of the game.

Ease,squeeze, smooth grooved stroke.

hocus, focus, making ball's a joke.

pride, stride, perfect shape march.

Money, honey, bread without starch.

Name, fame, heads turn now.

They see what is done, but all forget how.

.....and all forget why, in the great try and try.

For the love of the game is the last wall to clime.

For the last lesson, for the last time. St

Voodoo Daddy

Well...Kato was right, Maryland had what it took to whip my JayHawks. It hurt me so much to see the Terps play so well and my guys play so bad. Oh well, maybe next year.

Voodoo...will be sad all week.

Tom, you have a turtle named Herman that weighs as much as a large bowling ball? In the words of the immortal Mel Allen, "How about that?"

Kato~~~glowing with happiness today although sick as a dog.
