Well my boss/owner gave me a job that they weren't going to put in a bid for, due to having several jobs going at the same time. Since I am in training he gave it to me to bid to see how close I would come. Here are the results that I recieved today.

Coatings Unlimited $401,353
Harbor Pacific Contractors $432,590
Long Painting $470,927
Engineers estimate $407,500

My estimate $402,993

With my companies reputation I probably would have got the job. Pretty cool. The owner asked me if I rigged the results (jokingly) then gave me some praise along witht he senior estimator. Kudos to me. Now I know how the other estimator felt when he just signed a contract for $1,350,000.

Pretty good job. We use to send out Requests for Quotes to vendors and would try to guess what the responses would be.

Most of our RFQs returns were in the $800K to $1.5M range. To get within $50K was doing very good. Lowest and Highest bid hardly ever got the contract. It was always inbetween.

Yeah they always want some references for similar work done within the past few years. I was surprised that I was that close, but more surprised at how far off the others were. Wonder what they did to be that high besides run the profit up.
