Hi all ... I measured a new Brunswick 8' table & it was well under 8' from bumper edge to bumper edge. It measured about 4 X 8' when measuring the size of the slate bed. Is this the correct way to define the size of a table (it would seem there should be a standard, but if there is, I'm unaware). Thanks ...

Measure the playing area. Tip of bumper to the opposite bumper. A 4 by 8 will have a 44 by 88 playing area. A "pro" will have 46 by 92 inches of playing area.

Brunswick makes both the "home" and the "pro" 8 foot tables. The nose to nose is the way to determine what it really is. It's generally true that while the playing surface will be under 8 feet, the slate will approximate the 8 foot size stated. The common sizes are determined by the nose to nose measurment. Anything that does not fall into one of those sizes is unusual. The sizes are listed in many places such as:
