View Full Version : Are Coyboy Hats Good For Rain?`

Are cowboy hats good for keeping rain off ones head, or does rain screw them up? If some are good for the rain, which ones or type would that be? I was by a Western Wear store in Soho the other day when it started raining, and I was tempted to buy a Stetson to keep my head dry, but I didn't know if it was good for that or not.

As best as I can tell from the movies, real old time cowboys had only had one hat and it seems like they ever took them off and it had to perform in all kinds of weather. But it hardly ever rains in a western movie.

The clerk recommended an oilskin hat, but they don't look nearly as good, and it didn't have as wide a brim for dispersing the water outwards.

As a born and raised native Texan...

I found this Canadian web page for you. Cowboy hats are supposed to get wet - that's one of their intended purposes. Get a felt hat (which is made from beaver and rabbit...)

Hope this helps,

Tom,

Follow this link (http://www.tilley.com/shop3.asp?productno=LT6&detail=low&path=root\Tille y_Hats) for the best, and most stylish, rain and general purpose hat in the world. I have one and wear it all the time. It can be secured against gale force winds.

To protect you from the sun and rain, Tilleys fit lower than other hats. This also tends to give one a rather dashing appearance!

Perhaps heater451 will fashion your portrait with a genuine Tilley /ccboard/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Wally,

They are $65.00 US. I bought mine in Victoria for $72.00 CAD. I'm not sure about the "dashing" part.

Dave, I hope I look that good when I'm your age, if I make it that long.

BTW in your travels have you encountered anyone who said "By jove, that's a Tilley" ? /ccboard/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The Tilly looks like quite a hat also. I will check them out at the local EMS or Paragon Sporting Goods.

The Tilly seems more high performance. A cowboy hat seems to have a little more panache. (I think. I'm not really sure what panache means, but that won't stop me from using it.)
