You dont think that this is worrying ?

I assume that you work in a Hotel or Casino . How many ex cons does your employer employ ?
In the the Casino , none I'm sure.

What it means is that a third of an already disadvantaged section of the population has little or no chance of getting a job. IMO this does not make it safer for the rest of society.

Your are correct Q. I am not sure what the percent, but this is also an issue in the population of native american males. Many of the NA on Rez are extremely poor and lucky if they have shoes and blankets for the bitter cold winters.

I am not sure of the solution, but whatever is being done is not working. I worked for 9 years among the very poor black population, this was an 'inner city' type of population.

There are of course, middle class and affluent black families, but the percentage that fall in the lower strata and fill our prisons is staggering.

These people are choosing to break the law. Does the system work, yes, if they are getting people that are breaking the law.

the question is , why are so many black males breaking the law ?

There must be a reason . I think its normal that if something is not working , you take another look and decide on what you have to do to fix it .

Your attitude that 'they all have a choice ' is wearing thin . Its just not true . Or do you believe that black males are genetically more predisposed to crime than whites ?

What does the prison system have to do with a human being breaking the law?????????????????

The prison system is just a place to send these people. Maybe you are confused and meant to say the Justice system. It is the laws that are being broken that are sending these people to jail, NOT the prison. A prison does not choose who goes to jail????

Another thing, quit trying to group people together. These are all individuals. These individuals have their own mind and their own ability to make decisions. It is one's personal choice to go and rob a local convenience store. It is not because the person is black, is he made to rob the store, but only because this person has chosen to do it. The same thing is said for murder, drug dealing, etc...Some think the drug war is a waste of time or dumb, but that does not matter. Right now it is against the law to have pot, be ready to deal with the consequences if you are caught with it, selling it, or transporting it.

I am not trying to defend the laws. All I am saying is that if you choose to break the law, then understand that you are doing it because you made the choice to break the law, not because you are black. People in jail are not their because of the group they identify themselves with, they are in jail because of their own individual actions.

Self-Responsibility goes a LONG way.

I do not agree. It is not the governments job to make sure the individual is being a law-abiding citizen. That is the individuals job.

Since you think this is wearing thin, will you please enlighten me and show me an example of a black male that committed a crime (serious enough to get thrown in jail) and the black male did not make the decision to carry out the crime. (PLEASE DO NOT USE AN EXAMPLE OF THE GUY HAD TO DO IT OR HE WILL BE KILLED BY ANOTHER PERSON)

These are the statistics from the US Justice Dept. I didnt group anybody together . Its not a racial problem its a poverty problem or do you think go out robbing when they have money in their pocket ?

I'm sure you were brought up to believe in American values . These are good values , I'm not disputing that . Candyman put up a post which I think reflects the values of all decent people.

Not everybody kid has that kind of support when they are young .

Should everything be free???

I was brought up on Christian values which coincide nicely with some American values. In saying that, there is nothing American by stealing if you do not have the money.

I am not going to get into the poverty stuff, who is poor, etc. This is purely about whether you make a decision to break a law.

Let me ask you this...If a poor man spends his only available money to buy food to support his family, and some other poor man, goes into this mans house and steals his food, is that wrong??????????????????????? Is the theft by a poor man for food, against another poor man trying to feed his own family, wrong??? Is it? It is in my book.

Why didn't you give an answer to the example and question that I posed. You keep crying foul on the poor and I gave you a fair example of two poor people. They both made choices (one to save his money to feed his family, the other chose to steal), 1 good and 1 bad, do you still think the one that stole was not breaking the law??????

I was at the local bar last night playing pool and sitting on a stool facing away from the bar and towards the pool table. A guy I had never seen walked in and sat down next to me facing the bar waiting to get served. I don't think this guy had showered in a month he reaked so bad. Thank god it became my shot so I picked up my beer and moved to a seat on the other side of the table. I couldn't take it after the first minute.

A helmet might have saved him. So, car drivers have to wear seatbelts but cycle drivers don't have to wear helmets? I don't get it.
I hope the congressman wasn't at fault.

Jeesh, that's terrible.
My sisters were in two separate accidents last year.
Thank God, they were OK. Drivers nowadays ignore the red light when making a left turn. I've always told me, when the light turns green, it doesn't mean you're clear to go.
You gotta check your blind sides.
