Police: Woman commits assault with billiards ball

NEW BEDFORD -- Police arrested a New Bedford woman Thursday for using a cue ball to assault another woman, who later died.
According to police, Dina M. Alcantra, 50, was involved in a fight at Sapantiha’s Cafe at 280 Acushnet Ave. on Sept. 10 at about 1 a.m. Police say Alcantra took a cue ball from a pool table and struck the victim, Maria Linhares, 31, of New Bedford, in the head with the ball.
Linhares refused medical attention and went home. Several hours later, police received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive female. Linhares was found dead. The investigation into her death is continuing.
Alcantara was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
