View Full Version : Another one--that didn't quite work

(WEI Table (http://endeavor.med.nyu.edu/~wei/pool/pooltable2.html) )
The game is 8-ball, with my opponent on stripes. With his 13 locked against my 2, he can't get out to the 8, so he leaves me this:
I might have called 'safe', and shot the 7 in the side, but I was afraid that he would just play safe back, and I would be stuck wasting a shot to break the 2 out.
So I did this: START(%BC7G2%GZ6O6%Hb5D2%MD6F0%No5Z0%PV3Y1%Uh5D4%V[3O1%WK3D8%Xe0Z7%Yr9M7%Zi6D0%[f3Z8%\s0O1%]D3D7%^E6C6%eA5b2%_G1D2%`X9M9%aV9X3)END
The break was perfect, but unfortunately the 7 came up short.
He wound up getting out, shooting from this: START(%BC9J6%GF0E6%Hb5D2%MF2H2%No5Z0%PD7H1%Ur1D6%V G1H1%eA5b2)END
And no one even said "nice try" (tha bastards).
If the 1ball is potable , what about this. Pot the 1b via your 2b and leave him snookered at pos A. The 2b might come up the table to give more chance of hiding his ball. He might play cushion first with a lot of E and pot the 14 but that should leave him a long cut up the rail on the 8 to win, IF he pots the 14.
If he misses, you are favourite.
A snooker players point of view.

It looks like you could have just cut the 7 into the upper right corner and slid the CB to the cluster. If the 7 misses then there is the possibility of blocking that pocket for the 8. If you make the 7 and miss the cluster then you are still SOL. Or you could have just sent the 7 close to the upper pocket without trying to break the cluster and see what he would do.
But what the heck, your shot was a good try.
I would rather say that then hear that. LOL.

Why don't you submit these problems to Inside Pool? I believe they are the ones running a contest. You might win something.

i would opt to do this.
so the 7 sits pretty down by the pocket favoring the footstring.now your op. is set to make the 14. even if he tanks it on purpose you can do 1 of 2 things.
1) make the 7 in the cornor and hopefully get a break out.
1a) make the 7 off the 13 in the cornor giveing yourself a break out.
2) just play safe and tap the 2ball so the qb rushes the foot rail after you make contact w/ the 2ball. still leaveing them locked up so he has to do something w/ the 14. you have to leave the qb agenst the short rail as close to the 2ball as possable or he can cut the 13.

I like the thinking, although, to be honest, I'm not sure if I've placed the 7 perfectly right--and I don't remember if the 7 would have blocked the 14.
Still, it's good to be reminded not to forget the "simple" safe options.
(BTW, there was no 1b, it's the 13--hard to see, the way the Wei table draws the numerals.)
