Banking...

I recently was taught the method of banking where the number of dimonds is 1/2 the number of the wall that is not being hit off of. I can get it if it lines up perfectly, but other times it doesn't work. Am I using too much english, off center, or is this method only supposed to work when it lines up perfectly and don't have to spot shot it?
