The ending of the Fairness Doctrine
Divided the Country and gave us Hate Radio / Right Wing TV:
The America Media has never recovered, what came out of this was Hate Radio such as Rush Limbaugh and of course Right Wing TV Fox News. No one to call them out when they lie and they lie often.
Please read the Powell Memo, see link on the bottom of this write up. One of the major goals of the Right is to take over the Media and Control the message. They have accomplished this.
Here is a Quote from Thomas Jefferson:
“Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.”
The Founding Fathers had hoped that the Media would keep a watch on Government. Now the Media is under control of the people that need to be watched.
Those that control the Media control the message and in America right now we have 6 Corporations controlling the Media. That is dangerous for all Americans.
From a great read on why we need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine:
The abolition of The Fairness Doctrine had many opponents but they lost to the Reagan Revolution anti-regulatory extremists. Reagan's new FCC chair, Mark S. Fowler, sneered at the principle that broadcasters bore special responsibilities to ensure democratic discourse. It was all nonsense, said Fowler. "The perception of broadcasters as community trustees should be replaced by a view of broadcasters as marketplace participants."
The defectors were particularly worried about the passive indifference of the American public who never seemed to notice that they'd lost control of a public asset: the airwaves. Mr. and Mrs. Jones didn't pay attention when "boring but important" issues disappeared from discussion.
Another great read about the Fairness Doctrine:
It is the purpose of the First Amendment to preserve an uninhibited marketplace of ideas in which truth will ultimately prevail, rather than to countenance monopolization of that market, whether it be by the government itself or a private licensee. It is the right of the public to receive suitable access to social, political, aesthetic, moral and other ideas and experiences which is crucial here. That right may not constitutionally be abridged either by Congress or by the FCC.
— U.S. Supreme Court, Red Lion Broadcasting Co. v. FCC, 1969.
I read many articles from the Right how they are saying the bringing back the Fairness Doctrine would somehow end what they do, that is an outright LIE. Please read and learn the truth. What is really does is call them on the Carpet when they LIE which is all the time.
