Hey all. I was reading an old article on balkline play -- from 1909 in the NYT-- and they stated some averages in a form I cannot make sense of. Here's a quote:
In the evening Demarest beat Gallagher by 250 to 148, with an average of 14 12-17 and a high run of 82, to Gallagher's average of 8 12-17, and a high run of 42.
I understand normal billiard averages quite well: you make ten points in five innings at three cushion you're averaging 2; you make 50 points in 2 innings at straight rail you're averaging 25 and so on. But what can these averages of "14 12-17" and "8 12-17" mean? Thanks in advance.
