THe USA uses the NTSC tv system

Most of Europe and Australia uses a PAL tv system. Other parts of Europe use the SECAM system. Japan uses NTSC as well but it's slightly different

You need a multisystem VCR and TV to be able to watch tapes from the US
.

Was a bit silly to buy without doing the research first

If you don't have access to a multisystem tv and vcr, you can pay video media companies to 'convert' formats. YOu give them the US NTSC tape plus some dosh, they give you a PAL tape

Yes, this is a big problem. As bigbro6060 mentioned you are probably using a different playback format.

You should be able to go to an audio/video specialist and get the tape converted to PAL.

I don't think it was silly to not research this. Most people, and I would put this number at close to 95%, do not even have any idea that there are different broadcasting/playback formats in different areas of the world. This is not knowledge that everyone talks about. I would chalk this up to lessons learned, we all go through them sooner or later.

Re: Video recording speed

Hi,
Thanks to both of you for your answers but here is what happend.I have a video recorder that offers both Pal/NTSC play back watching and i have and watch a lot of accu-stats tape. The problem is that i have bought the tapes from a person on e-bay and he made the copies of 6 tapes on one tape.If the tape would be recorded on normal speed i could have watched it but he wanted to save on tapes and shipping and recorded the tapes with the faster sistem.I think that the only chance of me watching these tapes is to ask him to make me the copies with normal speed on more tapes, what do you think?

Sounds like his equipment is not very good.

What a cheapskate this guy must be, trying to save money on tapes. You can buy them here for $1 apiece.

Yes it sounds like your player can't handle the NTSC EP mode (Extended play).

I would never buy tapes off someone in EP or LP mode ! it's different if he's doing you a favour and sending you the tapes for cost of the tape and postage only but if your paying him for the product too, you as the customer should get some quality
