In a clear sign of the growth of mass media in pool, no fewer than four professional-level events at the BCA National 8-Ball Championships — taking place May 9-17 at the Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. — will be broadcast on television or over the Internet.

As usual, thousands of amateur players will be on hand over the 32nd annual edition of the nine-day championships, competing in singles, doubles and team events. But the surprise this year is the number of concurrent professional events secured by the BCA Pool League, host of the Nationals.

Tickets for all of the events are available at www.playbca.com.

• From May 9-11, U.K.-based Matchroom Sport will produce the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters, featuring 16 of the globe’s top 9-ball players, in the Royale Pavilion of the Riviera. Like all events produced by Matchroom, the Masters will be televised worldwide.

• On May 8-10, The Action Report will host the Diamond Bar Table Challenge, featuring Scott Frost of the U.S. and Darren Appleton of the U.K. in a multidiscipline bout. It will be broadcast live on www.theactionreport.com.

• On May 11-13, The Action Report will host the OB Cues Action Challenge 3, pitting Shane Van Boening of the U.S. against Alex Pagulayan of the Philippines in a 10-ball race to 100. It will be broadcast live on www.theactionreport.com.

• On May 13-17, Dragon Promotions will present the eighth annual Predator International 10-Ball Championship, featuring a 96-player invitational field representing 25 countries. It will be broadcast live from the Royale Pavilion on www.kozoom.net.

In addition to these events, the Billiard Education Foundation will produce its “Challenge the Stars” fundraiser on May 13, allowing amateurs to meet and match up with such pros as Allison Fisher, Johnny Archer, Ralf Souquet and Tony Robles.
