Kelly Fisher Plays Flawlessly in Regional Action Feb 8, 2007, 9:57 AM
Borderline Billiards in Bristol, Tenn., a new room owned by WPBA touring pro Janet Atwell, welcomed The Jacoby Cues Great Lakes for stop five of the 06-07 season in style. A field made up of 32 players, who came from all over the U.S. and Canada, competed for the WPBA Carolina Classic qualifier and $500 in added prize money.
The luck of the draw left the bottom half of the chart talent-laden, with matches like Julia Gabriel vs. Janet Atwell and Grace Nakamura vs. Kelly Fisher in the first round. Kelly Fisher, who is ranked No. 3 on the WPBA, showed how she earned her ranking by losing only six games in six sets to win the tournament with victories over Grace Nakamura, Janet Atwell, Julie Melman, Irene Henry and Buffy Jolie.
Tennessee local Jolie put in several weeks of hard practice to prepare for this tournament. The practice paid off as Jolie went all the way to the winner-side final before being stopped by Fisher. Another noteworthy performance was given by Michigan’s Irene Henry, who has been working equally as hard on her game. Henry’s only loss was to Fisher, setting up a Henry vs. Jolie match for the WPBA qualifier. It doesn’t get any better than this, as they played a hill-to-hill nailbiter with Henry coming out on top and Jolie taking third place. Henry, elated with the qualifier win, would then fall to tournament winner Kelly Fisher in a one-sided match.
The WPBA Carolina Classic will kick off the 2007 season on Feb. 21-25 at the Gateway Convention Center in Rocky Mount, N.C. Visit www.CarolinaWBC.com for more info.
