Derby City Classic Big Foot 10-Ball

Player: Francisco Bustamante
Event: erby City Classic Big Foot 10-Ball
Location: Elizabeth, N.J.
Date: January 27, 2019

The 16-Player, single-elimination 10-ball event at the Derby City Classic attracts an impossibly talented field with its $1,000 entry fee. Last year’s tournament, which takes place on a 10-foot Diamond table, had three-time Derby City all-around champ Francisco Bustamante against reigning World 10-Ball Champion Joshua Filler.

Filler broke open the ninth rack without much of a route to the 10 ball. Rather than hit and hope, the German decided to push out by tying the 8 ball up with the 9 along the head rail. Bustamante and Filler traded kicks until the Filipino finally had an angle on an object ball that let him start his way through the rack.

All the while, the cluster with the 8 and 9 wasn’t going anywhere, so Bustamante had to plan to either break it open or leave his opponent in a less than idea spot. Never one to pass up a feasible path to victory, Bustamante played position on the 7 ball into the right side pocket. The cue ball went a little longer than planned, though, leaving him with a tricky angle for the cue ball to break open the cluster.

Using top spin and a firm stroke, Bustamante drilled the 7 into the side, with the cue ball heading directly into the 9 ball. It clipped the 9 with a half-ball hit and then pushed the 8 ball toward the top left corner. With perfect speed, Django had an easy angle on the 8, which he used to clear the rack and grab a 6-3 lead.

Filler, however, came roaring back to win the set, 11-8. He then went on to the final, where he lost Jung-Lin Chang in the final.
